This definitive guide is aimed directly at Indian students. We will take you through the whole process from the starting requirement for New Zealand student visa to eventual fees so that you feel at ease when you apply.

What is a New Zealand Student Visa?

A New Zealand student visa is an official stamp on your passport that allows you to enter and study in New Zealand for a designated time at an approved education provider. If you are an Indian student enrolling on a course lasting longer than three months, then it is essential to apply for this visa. Just complete the simple requirement for New Zealand student visa and your fulfill your dream.

Types of Student Visas for New Zealand

New Zealand has different types of student visas that can be used. Essentially, it depends on what type of course, and if the course is shorter or longer than 3 months. Below are the types of visas you may need to consider:

1. Visitor Visa (up to 3 months)

With a visitor visa you can take a course of up to 3 months. You may not need any other visa type if the length of the course is not longer than 3 months, however, a visitor visa is accepted. Regardless, you should obtain New Zealand travel insurance in case of medical costs or travel issues.

2. Student Visa (3+ months)

If the length of your course exceeds 3 months, you will need to apply for a student visa. The student visa allows you to stay in New Zealand for over three months. Typically the student visa length applies to the length of your course.

With a student visa, you might also qualify to work up to 20 hours/week. During holiday periods you can work full-time. International travel insurance in case of an unforeseen event/issue/topic that could impact your ability to work, etc.

3. Working Holiday Visa (for a maximum of 6 months)

There are some courses that also last 6 months. If you are on a working holiday visa, you can take one or more courses in New Zealand while on this visa but the reason for visiting New Zealand must be for holiday.

4. Pathway Student Visa (for a maximum of 5 years)

If you are intending to do a long course in New Zealand of 3 years, but this may take up to 5 years, you need a pathway student visa to study in New Zealand. With a pathway student visa, you can stay in New Zealand for up to 5 years until you complete your course.

The Procedure to Apply Step by Step

The New Zealand student visa procedure is predominantly online and can be divided into stages, which should be easier to understand.

Step 1: Select Your Course and Receive an Offer of Place

You will not be able to apply for a visa without being accepted. Apply for a place to study at a New Zealand educational institution that is accredited by the New Zealand Qualification Authority (NZQA), and once accepted will receive an "Offer of Place" letter, which is a vital part of your application for your visa.

Step 2: Prepare Your Documentation Thoroughly

This is the most essential stage. New Zealand student visa documentation is significant, and not including a single document can have implications on timeframes, or even refusal. Start collating all the documentation listed in the following stages well in advance.

Step 3: Create an Account Online and Submit Your Application

Immigration New Zealand (INZ) encourages you to submit your application online through its Immigration Online portal. This is a quicker and more convenient process.

  • Create an account.

  • Complete the Student Visa application form (INZ 1012) online.

  • Upload scanned copies of each of your required documentation.

  • Pay the application fee, and the International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy (IVL) online.

Step 4: Attend a Biometrics and Medical Appointment

All Indian applicants for a New Zealand student visa must:

  • Provide Biometrics: This involves an appointment with a Visa Application Centre (VAC) in India to take fingerprints and photographs.

  • Medical & Chest X-ray Certificate: A medical examination must be completed with an INZ-approved doctor. This is required and all Indian students must do this, particularly those applying for study of more than 6 months.

Step 5: Wait for the Decision

Once your application has been lodged and all steps completed, the NZ government will start processing your application. The standard processing times is from a few weeks to a few months, so ensure you apply with plenty of time before your course will start. You can monitor your visa application online.
