What is Travel Insurance and How Does It Work?
Travel insurance is a policy that provides financial protection against unexpected expenses during a trip, covering medical emergencies, trip cancellations, lost baggage, passport loss, and personal liability. It is a contract between the insurer and the policyholder that guarantees compensation or reimbursement up to a defined sum insured.
Coverage begins on the departure date and remains active until the traveller returns to their point of origin. For trip cancellation benefits, coverage starts from the date of policy purchase. Per IRDAI regulations, travel insurance must be purchased before leaving India.
According to IRDAI guidelines, over 30 countries, including all 29 Schengen nations, require proof of valid travel insurance as a condition of visa approval or entry, making it not just advisable but mandatory for many Indian travellers.
Why Do You Need Travel Insurance for International Trips?
International travel carries financial and logistical risks that domestic travel does not. From expensive medical treatment abroad to trip disruptions and document loss, the financial exposure of an uninsured international trip is significant.
Medical costs abroad are high. A single hospitalisation in the USA can cost $3,000–$10,000 per day. Emergency surgery or ICU stays can run into lakhs of rupees. Without travel insurance, these costs are entirely out-of-pocket.
Trip disruptions are common. Flight delays, cancellations, missed connections, and lost baggage happen on millions of trips every year. These situations lead to unplanned hotel stays, rebooking fees, and emergency purchases, all covered under TravelAssure.
Documents and legal risks are real. Losing your passport or facing travel fraud in a foreign country without support is difficult to manage alone. Travel insurance covers passport replacement costs and provides 24x7 global assistance.
Visa compliance is mandatory. Travel insurance is a mandatory visa requirement for all 29 Schengen countries, the UAE, Cuba, Turkey, Georgia, Moldova, Romania, Qatar, and over 25 other destinations. Without valid insurance with minimum coverage, your visa application will be rejected.

What Factors Affect Your TravelAssure Premium?
How to Choose the Best TravelAssure Plan for Your Trip?
To choose the right travel insurance plan, match your destination risk, trip duration, and traveller profile to the right plan variant and sum insured.
Identify your destination zone: USA or Canada requires the highest sum insured (minimum $100,000 recommended). Schengen requires at least €30,000. Asia Pacific trips can work with $50,000.
Choose your coverage tier: Lite for essential medical cover, Basic for full trip and baggage protection, Comprehensive for maximum coverage with no sub-limits.
Select the right plan type: Student, Adventure, or Honeymoon if your trip fits one of those profiles.
Pick your sum insured: We recommend $200,000–$500,000 for USA/Canada, $100,000–$200,000 for Europe, $50,000–$100,000 for Asia Pacific.
Add relevant add-ons: 100% PED coverage for student plans if you have a pre-existing condition.
Buy immediately after booking: Trip cancellation coverage only protects costs paid before the policy is issued.

What Happens If You Travel Without Insurance?
If you travel without TravelAssure or any travel insurance, you bear every unexpected cost personally.
You pay for medical emergencies out-of-pocket. A single hospital visit in the USA can cost $2,000–$3,000. Emergency surgery or a hospital stay can exceed $10,000 per day, a financial risk most travellers are not prepared for.
You lose non-refundable trip costs. If your trip is cancelled due to illness, a family emergency, or visa rejection, flights, hotels, and tour packages already paid for are not recoverable without insurance.
You handle baggage and passport loss alone. Lost luggage, delayed baggage, or a stolen passport adds unexpected costs and logistical difficulty, all of which TravelAssure handles.
You navigate foreign healthcare without support. TravelAssure provides 24x7 global assistance via Europ Assistance, including hospital coordination, emergency evacuation, and cashless treatment. Without insurance, you manage foreign healthcare systems, language barriers, and medical bills alone.
You risk visa rejection. For Schengen, UAE, Turkey, Cuba, Georgia, Qatar, and 25+ other countries, travel insurance is a mandatory visa requirement. Travelling to these countries without valid insurance means your visa application is rejected before your trip even begins.
Real-Life Scenarios Where Travel Insurance Helps
Scenario 1: Medical emergency in New York You are hospitalised in New York with appendicitis during a business trip. The bill comes to $28,000. With Niva Bupa’s comprehensive travel insurance ($100,000 SI), Europ Assistance coordinates cashless payment directly with the hospital. You are discharged and fly home without paying anything out-of-pocket.
Scenario 2: Trip cancelled due to family emergency Two days before your Paris trip, a family member is hospitalised. Your flights and hotel, totalling ₹85,000, are non-refundable. Niva Bupa's trip cancellation benefit reimburses these costs (up to $500 per the policy terms) so the financial loss is minimised.
Scenario 3: Baggage lost on Bangkok layover Your checked-in baggage is permanently lost by the airline on a connecting flight to Bangkok. Niva Bupa’s trip holiday insurance compensates for the permanent baggage loss (up to $500) so you can replace your belongings and continue your trip.
Scenario 4: Student hospitalised in the UK An Indian student on a 12-month student plan in the UK is admitted for 5 days following an accident. TravelAssure covers the full hospitalisation cost, OPD follow-up, dental treatment from the injury, and arranges a compassionate visit for one family member, all through the Europ Assistance network.
Scenario 5: Passport stolen in Istanbul Your passport is stolen while travelling in Turkey. TravelAssure covers the cost of obtaining a replacement passport and provides emergency assistance to guide you through the process at the Indian consulate.
Scenario 6: Flight delayed by 8 hours in Dubai Your Dubai-Mumbai flight is delayed by 8 hours due to carrier equipment failure. TravelAssure pays $50 (2 × $25 for two 4-hour blocks) as trip delay compensation, covering your meals and incidentals at the airport.
Scenario 7: Student's sponsor passes away An Indian student studying in Canada loses their financial sponsor (father) due to an accident. TravelAssure's Sponsor Protection benefit covers remaining tuition fees (up to $10,000) and one return economy airfare home, so education is not disrupted.

How to Avoid TravelAssure Claim Rejection?
Most travel policy insurance claim rejections occur due to non-disclosure of pre-existing conditions, delay in intimation, or claims falling under policy exclusions. Follow this checklist to ensure your claim is processed smoothly:
Before buying:
Disclose all pre-existing medical conditions accurately at the time of purchase
Read the policy exclusions and the negative country list carefully
Add relevant add-ons, 100% PED cover if you have a pre-existing condition
During your trip: 4. Inform Europ Assistance immediately, delays in intimation are the most common reason for rejection 5. Do not pay the hospital directly if you can wait for the cashless process to be initiated 6. Collect all documents, bills, reports, and receipts from day one
At claim submission: 7. Submit a fully completed claim form with all supporting documents 8. Ensure the claim falls within a covered benefit and within benefit limits 9. Follow the exact claim process in your policy wording

If your trip is extended due to a genuine emergency, TravelAssure provides emergency trip extension coverage for up to 7 days. The sub-limit for this extension is $20,000. You must contact Europ Assistance before the original policy expiry date to request an extension.
For student plans, policies can be renewed or extended at the end of each policy term. Extensions must be purchased before the existing policy lapses.
Is Travel Insurance Mandatory for Indians?
Travel insurance is not universally mandatory for Indian travellers. However, it is a mandatory visa or entry requirement for over 30 countries. For Schengen countries, a minimum coverage of €30,000 is required, TravelAssure plans for Schengen destinations meet this requirement.
Does TravelAssure Cover COVID-19?
Yes. All TravelAssure plans cover COVID-19 hospitalisation expenses up to the full sum insured. If you test positive for COVID-19 during your overseas trip and require hospitalisation, TravelAssure covers your treatment costs subject to standard policy terms.
Although most countries have lifted COVID-19 travel restrictions, the virus continues to circulate globally. An unexpected COVID-19 infection abroad, which triggers mandatory isolation and treatment, can result in significant unplanned expenses. TravelAssure's full-sum-insured COVID-19 coverage ensures you are protected.
What's the Difference Between Travel Insurance vs Health Insurance?
Health insurance and travel insurance are different types of insurance that serve various purposes. While health insurance is a risk management system that financially protects travellers from medical expenses, travel insurance protects travellers from both medical and non-medical trip-related expenses.
As a company that offers both health and travel insurance, Niva Bupa provides world-class international health coverage but depending on the need, travel insurance also offers broader coverage for non-medical risks, mitigating their financial impact and protecting travellers.
Travellers can refer to the following table for a clearer understanding of the differences between health and travel insurance:
Both work best together. Your Niva Bupa health insurance covers you in India; TravelAssure covers you while abroad.
What's the Difference Between Travel Insurance vs Credit Card Travel Insurance?
Travel insurance is a comprehensive policy you actively purchase to cover medical emergencies, trip cancellations, and travel risks. Credit card insurance is a limited, complimentary benefit offered with certain cards and usually provides restricted coverage with conditions.
