The central and state governments run various welfare schemes to ensure that pregnant women receive proper care and adequate nutrition. One such initiative is the Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY).

Under this scheme, financial assistance is directly transferred to the bank accounts of expectant mothers — ₹5,000 is provided for maternal care, and an additional ₹1,000 (totalling ₹6,000) is given if a girl child is born. The main goal is to support women's nutrition and healthcare during pregnancy.

So far, over 4.26 crore women have registered under this scheme. Out of these, more than 3.90 crore women have already received benefits totalling approximately ₹18,000 crore in their bank accounts.

What is PMMVY?

Launched on January 1, 2017, by the Ministry of Women and Child Development, this centrally sponsored maternity benefit program aims to support pregnant and lactating women through financial aid to ensure better nutrition and health. In the past eight years, millions of women across the country have benefited.

If you or someone you know is expecting a child, they may be eligible to apply for this scheme. Let’s learn more about how this scheme works, how to apply, and how much financial support is provided.

What are the Benefits of PMMVY?

Under the Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana, women receive a benefit of ₹5,000 during their first pregnancy. This amount is disbursed in two instalments. If a woman gives birth to a girl during her second pregnancy, she is granted a lump sum of ₹6,000. However, this payment is provided only in the case of the birth of a daughter.
