If you have a family health insurance plan, you are most likely eligible for a tax deduction. However, most people never claim the full amount they are usually entitled to, simply because health insurance and tax planning are rarely discussed together. Section 80D of the Income Tax allows for deductions of the premiums paid towards health insurance for self, family members, and parents.
Most people tend to think about this only in February, when investment proofs are due. By then, the decisions are usually already taken. Thinking about who is covered under which plan and at what premium earlier in the policy year can help you gather more tax returns. This blog gives you a straightforward guide to everything you need to know about tax-saving in family health insurance policies.
How Does Section 80D Work For A Family Health Insurance Plan?
Section 80D works across two separate buckets. One for you, your spouse, and your children, and the other for your parents. They are mutually exclusive, and both can be claimed in the same financial year.
So if you are under 60 and your parents are senior citizens, then you can have potential savings of ₹75,000. If you and your parents are both senior citizens, then you can have potential savings of ₹1,00,000.
Some things that you should keep in mind:
- This is a deduction on the premium amount paid, not on the sum assured. A ₹10 lakh and a ₹20 lakh plan at the same annual premium will offer you the same tax benefit. There is no need to choose a higher sum insured solely for tax benefits.
- The cap of ₹5,000 for preventive health check-ups (for self and family members) falls under the overall limit. It is not in addition to your limit. So if your limit for yourself and family members is ₹25,000, and you spend ₹5,000 on a health check-up, your remaining deductible premium is ₹20,000.
- You cannot split a family floater plan's premium between its individual members unless the insurance company issues a premium split certificate. A floater is a single policy with one premium.
- Premiums must be paid through any method except cash. Cheques, net banking, credit cards, and other digital forms of payment are acceptable.
Can You Cover Parents in the Same Policy and Still Save Tax?
Yes, you can. However, covering your parents in the same policy might cost you more than without.
When you cover both parents and children under a floater, the insurance company issues only one premium receipt with no specific breakup. There is no way to establish what proportion of the total premium goes towards covering your senior citizen parents specifically, which is a requirement when claiming the additional ₹50,000 for individuals above 60.
Two Things That a Lot of People Tend to Get Wrong
- Your parents do not need to be financially dependent on you to be covered under the tax benefit. Dependency is not a criterion under Section 80D. Even if they are retired and financially self-sufficient, you can still pay the premium for them and claim the deduction.
- They do not need to live in the same city. You can pay the premium on their insurance policy from a different city without any problem.
When Does One Policy Make Sense?
- For parents under 60, a single family floater plan is typically the better choice as it offers one premium, one receipt, and a clear deduction of ₹25,000 on the parental portion.
- When one or both parents are above 60, it is usually a smarter decision to take a separate policy for them. This way, the full ₹50,000 deduction for senior citizens can be utilised without confusion during tax filing.
- You might also find medical coverage features that are better suited for senior citizens in a senior citizen health plan, as compared to a standard floater plan. These include covers for domiciliary hospitalisation and higher limits for room rent.
If both policies are taken from the same insurance company, the claim process tends to be more straightforward.
Is a Family Floater Plan or an Individual Plan Better for Tax Savings?
Ultimately, the tax benefit would be the same whether it is one family floater or multiple individual policies. The clear difference is only evident when you claim on insurance at the time of illness, and that is what most buyers do not consider until it is too late.
When Does a Floater Plan Work Well?
If your children are under 10 and both your spouse and you are under 40 without any major illnesses, a floater policy would probably suit your family's needs, be more affordable, and give you a reasonable shared sum insured.
When Do Separate Policies Make Sense?
If any senior citizen in your family has a pre-existing condition, then a single floater policy would imply that any hospitalisation expense used for that member will draw from the shared sum insured. This would reduce the available amount for the rest of the family for the remainder of the policy year.
What is a Hybrid Approach?
This is often the most recommended because it involves taking a floater plan for yourself, your spouse, and your children, while getting a separate policy for your senior parents. This combination of plans allows for deductions that can total up to ₹75,000. It keeps claim histories independent and also ensures that the coverage is actually suited for each group’s health needs.
If you prefer one plan for the whole family, make sure to ask the insurer for a premium split certificate before purchase. Not all insurers will provide one, and claiming the additional senior citizen benefit could become problematic.
Can OPD or Preventive Care Be Covered by a Family Health Plan and Still Be Claimed Under Tax Benefits?
Yes. This is typically where a lot of families miss out on valuable tax savings. If your policy includes an OPD (outpatient) add-on, the premium paid for that add-on is fully deductible under Section 80D alongside your base plan premium. This means that you can also claim consultations with your doctor, diagnostic tests, dental checkups, and AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani, Siddha, and Homoeopathy) treatment costs.
For example, you pay ₹18,000 for a family floater policy and add an OPD rider for ₹4,000. Your total deductible premium would be ₹22,000. This could include four visits to the paediatrician, two visits to the dentist, and a couple of blood tests required by your children during the year, none of which may have necessitated hospitalisation.
What to Check for Before Buying an OPD Add-On
- Per-visit limits: Some policies will only reimburse ₹ 300 to ₹500 per consultation. If your physician charges you ₹800 for your visit, then you will have to bear the difference out of pocket.
- Network restrictions: Check with your plan restricts you to hospitals that are in the insurer’s network, and if that network includes your preferred hospital or doctor.
- Annual sub-limit: Most OPD riders have an annual sub-limit. Make sure you know exactly what this amount is before you rely on it.
- No claim bonus impact: Check whether using the OPD benefits can count as a claim on your plan and therefore affect your renewal bonus. Certain policies may count this as separate from regular claims.
To Sum It Up:
The right structure depends on your family.
- If you are a young couple with no senior parents: A single family floater will work fine. Simple ₹25,000 deduction (including premium), cheaper premiums, and easy to manage.
- If you have parents aged 60+: Buy a separate policy for your parents, and a floater for the rest of the family. ₹75,000 tax deduction available, designed as per their requirements.
- If you need frequent outpatient visits: Purchase a base policy plus an OPD rider. The total premiums (base policy plus rider) will be eligible for tax deduction, and your routine OPD visits will start earning benefits.

FAQs:
Is There Tax Relief on Health Insurance in India?
Yes, Section 80D of the Income Tax Act allows you to deduct health insurance premiums from your taxable income.
Can I Claim Section 80D if my Employer Already Provides Group Health Insurance?
Yes, you can. If you purchase an additional personal health insurance policy, then the premium you pay out of pocket is fully eligible for deduction under 80D.
Can I Claim 80D Deduction if I Pay My Parents’ Health Insurance Premium Through UPI or Their Bank Account?
UPI is a valid payment method, but the premium should ideally be paid from your account. Paying through your parents’ account can make it harder to claim the deduction.
Is GST on Health Insurance Premium Also Deductible Under Section 80D?
Yes, the total amount you pay, including the 18% GST, is considered a part of the premium and is fully deductible.
