Countries Where an Indian Driving Licence is Valid

Share

Travelling to a foreign country is an exhilarating experience for many. The thrill of exploring new destinations, immersing yourself in different cultures, and indulging in diverse cuisines and sights is unparalleled. This excitement multiplies when you have the freedom to drive, navigating the holiday destination at your own pace, from winding country roads to bustling city streets, from scenic coastal highways to challenging mountainous terrains.

While public transport and taxis are always options, having your own rented vehicle offers unmatched adventure and convenience. If you have an active Indian driving licence and are planning a trip abroad, you may not need to worry about obtaining a new licence for many popular travel destinations. Several countries recognise Indian driving licences, especially if you have an International Driving Permit (IDP) and a valid travel insurance policy. The licence can also be used in English or any approved language, including Swedish, German, French, Danish, and Norwegian.

1. United States of America

The USA allows the use of an Indian driving licence for up to one year from the date of entry. However, the licence must be in English. It must be translated into English if it's in a regional language. Additionally, you must carry an attested I-94 form as proof of your legitimate entry into the US.

2. Australia

Australia permits using an Indian driving licence for up to a year in New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, and the Australian Capital Territory. In northern Australia, the licence is valid for only three months. It's wise to carry an international driving permit, especially in the northern regions. Like in India, driving is on the left side of the road in Australia.

3. New Zealand

New Zealand allows Indian driving licence holders to drive for up to a year. Beyond this period, you need to obtain an international drivers licence. You must be at least 21 years old, and your licence must be in English or accompanied by a New Zealand Transport Agency translation.

4. United Kingdom

Your Indian driving licence is valid for up to a year in the UK, including England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland. You can drive vehicles mentioned in your licence, including cars and motorcycles. The licence must be in English, and driving is on the left side of the road.

5. Switzerland

Switzerland allows Indian driving licence holders to drive for up to a year. The licence must be in English, and you can lease any vehicle your licence permits. Ensure you follow Swiss traffic rules and drive on the right side of the road.

6. Germany

Germany recognises an Indian driving licence for six months. The licence must be in English or German. If not, you must get it translated by the police authorities or rental agencies. After six months, an IDP or a German driving licence is required. Driving is on the right side of the road.

7. France

France permits driving with an Indian licence for up to a year, provided it is translated into French. Driving is on the right side of the road, and cars have their steering wheels on the left, which might take some getting used to.

8. Malaysia

In Malaysia, an Indian driving licence is valid as long as it is in English or Malay. If it's in another language, translate it at the Indian Embassy in India or Malaysia. An IDP can also be useful.

9. Bhutan

Bhutan allows Indians to drive with an Indian driving licence, supplemented by other documents like your passport and voter ID. However, considering the rough and narrow terrains, it might be wise to let experienced drivers handle more challenging routes.

10. Singapore

Singapore permits driving with an Indian driving licence for up to a year, provided it is in English or has been translated. After a year, a Singaporean driving licence is required. You must be at least 18 years old to drive.

11. South Africa

South Africa recognises an Indian driving licence for up to a year. The licence must be in English. Carrying an IDP is advisable for renting vehicles easily. Due to safety concerns, appropriate travel insurance is also recommended.

12. Sweden

Sweden allows driving with an Indian licence for up to a year. Always carry another form of ID and photographs.

Conclusion

Driving in a foreign country with an Indian driving licence can significantly enhance your travel experience, allowing you to explore destinations at your own pace. However, it is crucial to be aware of each country’s specific regulations regarding the validity of foreign driving licences. Always verify the latest rules before your trip, and consider carrying an IDP and necessary translations to ensure a smooth and hassle-free driving experience.
