Remote work has gained a lot of popularity lately because of the freedom it offers. For years, engineers, designers, and consultants across India have been working primarily on laptops. Thailand became the obvious answer. Affordable flights from major Indian cities, reliable internet connectivity, a lower cost of living, and a culture that warmly welcomes long-term foreign residents make Thailand an attractive choice.
What Is the Destination Thailand Visa (DTV)?
Launched in 2024, the Destination Thailand Visa is basically a long-term (5-year) multi-entry visa for digital nomads, remote workers, freelancers, and business owners.
The Thai government introduced it to boost the economy, encourage longer stays, and attract a market segment that was gradually shifting elsewhere. The long-stay visitors who spend real money were struggling because of the 30-day tourist stamp procedure. The DTV fixes that issue while providing additional benefits. A lot of people also think of it as the working holiday visa.
Who Is It For?
It was created for professionals who earn from abroad, including remote workers, freelancers, entrepreneurs, consultants, and digital content creators.
It is not like those traditional work visas, the DTV is not for people seeking employment with companies based in Thailand or Thai companies. Instead, it targets individuals whose income comes from outside Thailand.
Who Can Apply From India?
Indian Citizens are eligible. There are no special restrictions, as such, compared to other countries.
People who are eligible:
Should have an Indian passport valid for 6+ months
Must be 20 years and above
Remote employee, freelancer with international clients, or business owner abroad
Should have a clean criminal record
Should also have valid travel insurance
DTV Visa Requirements for Indians
There are a few documents you should keep ready while applying for the visa:
Passport: You will require a passport, and it should be valid for more than 6 months.
Bank Balance: You will have to have at least TBH 500,000 or around ₹14.5 lakh in your bank account.
Employment Proof: You may be asked for employment proof like a contract, payslip, or freelance invoices
Photograph: Also take a recent passport-size photo
Police Clearance: You have to be verified and cleared by the police.
How Much Bank Balance Do You Actually Need?
For people who plan on getting a DTV, commonly referred to as a working holiday visa Thailand, it is important to understand about the minimum bank balance you are required to maintain in the bank account. The requirement is THB 500,000, which translates to around ₹14.5 lakh. You need to consistently maintain this balance for the last three months, not only on the day you apply.
Counts: Personal savings or checking accounts, sometimes fixed deposits.
Doesn’t count: cash, PayPal, crypto, or investment accounts like stocks and mutual funds.
A very common question is whether family can pool funds? Yes, individuals who are financially dependent on their parents or other family members can apply, provided they submit a sponsorship letter along with proof of their relationship.
Also, it is suggested to maintain slightly more than the required amount. Most successful applicants have THB 600,000–800,000 in order to represent a stronger profile.
How Do Indians Apply for the DTV?
The main process includes:
Confirm eligibility: It’s recommended that you check whether you are eligible for the visa before applying.
Required Documents: Ensure all necessary documents are prepared and ready before you begin the application process. The required documents generally consist of a valid passport, passport-sized photographs, bank statements, employment or business-related proof, travel insurance coverage, and a police clearance certificate.
Online Application: thaievisa.go.th is the official website through which you can apply.
Upload documents: Then, on the site, you are required to upload these documents. It is important to ensure that these scans are sharp and legible. Blurry scans usually lead to delayed approvals.
Pay the fee: Pay the required amount, which is around ₹25000.
Wait for approval: Approval usually takes around 15-20 business days.
One important point to note is that you can’t apply for DTV from within Thailand. You need to be outside Thailand to do so because switching from a tourist stamp to a DTV in-country isn't allowed.
How Much Does the DTV Cost?
Whatever amount you pay during the process of getting the visa is non-refundable. Even if your application gets rejected, you don’t get your money back. That is why it becomes really important to get the paperwork right the first time you are applying for it.
How Long Can You Stay on a DTV?
Through the DTV, you get up to 180 days per entry. If you have already stayed for that many days during your trip, it is advisable that you leave and re-enter to keep staying legally. Now that you get multiple entries, you can come as much as you need for five years.
The DTV also allows you to extend your 180-day limit once per year. Keep in mind that this option is available at an additional cost.
Can Indians Work in Thailand on a DTV?
It is crucial to understand what work-related activities are allowed and which are not. Below is the list:
You may have noticed something. That is, the DTV is built exclusively for remote work outside Thailand or freelance work serving international clients. If your goal is employment within the Thai economy, you'd need a Non-Immigrant B visa with a proper work permit instead.
Can Family Members Join You?
Yes, your spouse and unmarried children below 20 can apply as well. But they get to come as dependents and are required to pay the full visa fee. They get the same 5-year, 180-day rights as the primary applicant.
Spouse: You are required to show a marriage certificate as proof of your relationship.
Children: Birth certificates required.
Each dependent gets their own visa, not a shared one.

Conclusion
The DTV or the working holiday visa Thailand has changed the math for Indian remote workers who would like to visit Thailand more frequently and for longer duration. It's cheaper than almost every other long-term option, demands no minimum salary, and gives five years of flexibility with 180 days per entry. At the same time, it’s not for everyone. If you would like to work for a Thai company, you should look for other options. That is why it’s crucial to understand the terms and conditions and check whether it’s the best option for you or not.
