E20 Fuel in India
Written by: Sanjana Sharma

The impact of E20 fuel on vehicles depends on engine age and compatibility. While post-2023 vehicles run smoothly, older engines may experience a 3% to 6% drop in mileage, rubber hose degradation, and metal corrosion due to ethanol's water-attracting properties. Regular maintenance and proper compatibility checks keep vehicles running safely.

Quick Read

•E20 fuel is made up of 20% ethanol derived from plants and 80% of regular fuel.
•Cars manufactured since April 2023 have ethanol-resistant components.
•Vehicles made before April 2023 may experience a 3% to 6% drop in fuel efficiency.
•Ethanol fuel draws moisture from the atmosphere, thus rusting steel fuel tanks.
Regular inspection of the fuel filter and ethanol fuel additives will help older engines.

India is rapidly switching to renewable fuels to minimise air pollution and expensive crude oil imports. As part of this big green initiative, the government of India is now introducing E20 fuel at all petrol pump stations in the country. While this shift helps the environment and supports local sugar farmers, many car and bike owners worry about how E20 fuel affects their engines. Here is a comprehensive guide that discusses everything related to E20 fuel in detail.

What is E20 Fuel and Why is India Adopting It?

E20 is a blend of motor fuel with 20% ethanol content and 80% petrol content. India is using this fuel to reduce carbon emissions, lower crude oil import costs, and improve farmers' incomes. Ethanol is a renewable energy source as it is extracted from plants such as sugar cane and excess food grain crops. The use of E20 Fuel in India enables India to save thousands of crores of rupees of foreign exchange per year.

How Does Ethanol Interact Chemically with Your Engine?

Ethanol interacts chemically with your engine by absorbing atmospheric moisture, acting as a solvent, and oxidising exposed metallic and rubber components.

Moisture Attraction and Corrosion

Ethanol has hygroscopic properties that attract water from the surrounding environment. The water in the E20 will form a phase separation within the fuel tank. The acid formed will settle at the bottom of the tank, corroding the steel components of the fuel tank and fuel injection system.

Solvent Action on Fuel Lines

Ethanol is a very strong organic solvent that removes old dirt and varnish from fuel lines. But for engines that do not meet current standards, the solvent effect causes deterioration of rubber hoses, rubber gaskets, and plastic seals. The rubber will soon block up the fuel injectors and carburettor nozzles.

Oxidation and Metal Pitting

When ethanol combusts, it produces some by-products which are slightly acidic and will interact with metals such as aluminium, brass, and copper used in the construction of the engine. The interaction causes corrosion, leading to wear on valve seats and faster degradation of engine oil.

What are the Real-World Performance and Mileage Impacts?

Real-world tests show that E20 slightly reduces fuel mileage while offering a minor boost in engine combustion efficiency.

  • Slight Drop in Overall Mileage: The energy density of ethanol is about 33% lower than that of normal gasoline. Because ethanol contains less energy, your engine consumes a little more fuel to generate equal amounts of energy. This leads to an estimated 3-6% reduction in fuel efficiency.

  • Smoother Combustion and Octane Boost: The natural octane number of ethanol is very high at 108 RON. Adding ethanol to petrol increases the fuel's anti-knock properties. Modern engines have sensors that regulate ignition timing to take advantage of the additional octane.

  • Potential Cold Starting Delays: The amount of heat required to vaporise ethanol is higher than that of regular fuel. In cold winter mornings or in rainy conditions, two-wheelers with carburettor engines and older automobiles may experience longer cranking times. Drivers might have to operate the choke or blip the throttle to start the engine.

Is Your Vehicle Compatible with E20 Fuel?

Vehicle compatibility depends on your vehicle's manufacturing year, engine tuning, and fuel system component materials.

Post-April 2023 Vehicles

All vehicles made in India from April 2023 onwards will be compliant with E20. These vehicles have an ethanol-resistant fuel system that consists of rubber hoses, coated tanks that resist corrosion, and engines that have been recalibrated. You can therefore be sure of filling your newer vehicles with E20 Fuel in India.

Vehicles Built Between 2015 and 2023

Vehicles manufactured from 2015 through 2023 were meant to use E10 petrol fuel blends. These vehicles can tolerate E20 blends without breaking down immediately, although using them may cause some rubber degradation over time. It is recommended that owners get their engine control software updated at a service centre.

Pre-2015 Legacy Vehicles

Vehicles produced before 2015 do not have materials that can withstand ethanol. Using large amounts of ethanol in older cars will make the rubber fuel lines brittle and cause the carburettor float to expand. This could also lead to corrosion in the metal tank.

Check Your Fuel Cap

It is easy to verify the suitability of your car by looking at the label inside your fuel filler flap or by referring to your car manual. Suitable cars will have labels clearly stating that they are E20 compatible.

Preventative Maintenance Practices

When using an older car, ensure the blend does not stay in the fuel tank for weeks without any use, as this can degrade the fuel due to moisture. It is wise to use ethanol fuel additives and change fuel filters after every 10,000 kilometres.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Can I mix E20 fuel with regular petrol in my fuel tank?

Yes, you can use the E20 blend with regular fuel within your fuel tank. The fuel ratio is automatically controlled by the electronic control unit of your vehicle, although in older cars, there might be small reductions in mileage.

2. Does E20 fuel void my car's manufacturer warranty?

Using E20 will not void your car's warranty as long as your car’s manual indicates it is compatible with this fuel. But if your old car breaks down due to fuel pump damage after the use of fuel, you can blame the dealerships for using unapproved fuel.

3. Why does my bike engine vibrate or shake more on E20 petrol?

Ethanol combusts in a manner that is different from that of pure petrol. In engines that have not been properly calibrated, this results in an unbalanced mixture of fuel and air, causing engine knock and handlebar vibration.

4. Will E20 fuel expire or go bad if left in the vehicle tank?

Yes, the fuel life of E20 is lower than normal petrol. The presence of moisture in ethanol leads to fuel separation if it is not used within three weeks, as E20 is susceptible to absorbing atmospheric moisture.

5. Are fuel additives necessary when using E20 fuel in older cars?

Good-quality ethanol-based fuel additives are recommended for older cars. The fuel additives help to stabilise the fuel mixture, prevent phase separation, remove carbon deposits from the injectors and help coat the metal parts to prevent corrosion.
