Historical Landmarks in Japan

Japan embodies a travel paradox: it strives, with great vigor, into the future while also holding dear its history. For any traveler, the richest travel experience is uncovering the stunning historic places in Japan that remember the shoguns and samurai and an ancient spiritual practice. From tranquil temples and rich shrines to strong castles, every one can be its own living memory and monument of art, faith, and history in Japan. This guide will lean into some of the most beautiful historical sites to give readers a way to understand the nature of this beautifully rich and strange country.

The many historic sites of Japan are plentiful and cared for, often holding the designation of UNESCO World Heritage sites. A cursory understanding of the two main types will be helpful. Temples (tera or ji) are sites of worship for Buddhists, uplifted by a pagoda and beautiful gardens, shrubs, and ponds. Shrines (jinja) are the opposite, and sites of worship for Shinto, often set aside for kami (gods or spirits) and entered through some type of distinctive gate called a torii.

Famous Historical Places in Japan

Buddhist Temples

Buddhist temples provide a place of quiet reflection, and they are some of the most treasured historical places in Japan. They are usually home to priceless sculptures and art, and are nestled in beautifully designed landscapes.

Kinkaku-ji (The Golden Pavilion), Kyoto

Perhaps the most photographed of all historical sites in Japan, Kinkaku-ji is an awe-inspiring sight. This Zen temple is actually a gold leaf and shines brightly in the lake that mirrors it exactly. Originally the retirement villa of a shogun created in the 14th century, it was changed to a temple after his death. While the temple is a carefully reconstructed building completed in the 1950's after a fire, it is still a beautiful symbol of the cultural wealth of Kyoto and a very iconic historic site in the country.

Todai-ji, Nara

Todaiji Temple and its central feature, the Great Buddha (Daibutsu), epitomize Nara. The Daibutsu is located in a huge wooden building which is the largest in the world.

The Great Buddha was ordered to be constructed as the complete imperial ordinance in 743, and cast with full state sponsorship, and with the cooperation of people of all social classes. The consecration ceremony of the Buddha took place in 752.

It took around 40 years to ultimately complete the full temple complex which originally included multiple pagodas, and several halls, and gradually expanded via temple service areas. When the capital moved to Kyoto, the temple sustained its prosperity under the backing of imperial support from emperors who ruled at the same time. Two great wars attacked the temple in 1180 and again in 1567 damaging severely and burning most of it as well.

Nonetheless, the temple was meticulously restored, and moved on from those incidents. Many of the current buildings found at the temple today are rebuilt structures. Todaiji Temple is a Unesco World Heritage site and one of the historical sites in Japan showing a demonstration of ancient engineering feats.

Shinto Shrines

Shinto, Japan's original religion, is closely bound to mother nature and ancestors. Its shrines can typically be known by their brighter vermillion color and their peaceful relationship to their surrounding landscape.

Fushimi Inari Taisha, Kyoto

Fushimi Inari Shrine is an essential Shinto shrine located in the south of Kyoto. It is recognized for its thousands of vermilion torii gates which create a distinguished network of trails that climbs the wooded forest of the sacred Mount Inari, which is 233 meters tall and located on the shrine grounds.

Fushimi Inari Shrine is the most significant of the thousands of shrines in Japan that are dedicated to Inari, the Shinto god of rice. Foxes are considered to be the messengers of Inari and whirl the shrine grounds with fox statues as a result. Fushimi Inari Shrine is an ancient shrine, even before Kyoto became the capital in 794.

The main attraction of almost every foreign visitor and what they usually come to see is the mountain trails of the shrine, but it also has some quite beautiful buildings. The first building at the entrance of the shrine is the Romon Gate, which was donated by the warrior leader Toyotomi Hideyoshi in 1589. It’s one of the historical landmarks in Japan.

Itsukushima Shrine, Miyajima

The Itsukushima Shrine is located on Miyajima island. The shrine is famous around the world for its ‘floating’ torii gate. The shrine and torii gate are unique as they are built over the water and appear to be floating when the tide is high. The shrine buildings include a stage for Noh theater, prayer hall and main hall, all situated on boardwalks supported by pillars.

In 1168, Taira no Kiyomori, who was the most powerful man in Japan chose the island as the location of his clan’s family shrine and had Itsukushima Shrine constructed. The shrine is located in a small cove and the torii gate is located out in the Seto Inland Sea, there are paths leading around the cove where people enjoy walking while looking back into the sea.

Feudal Castles

Japanese castles are powerful and exquisite buildings, famous for their use as military fortifications and as representations of a lord's authority. They are a different and much more militarized aspect of history and are certainly some of the more remarkable historical sites in Japan.

Himeji Castle, Himeji

Himeji Castle is often called as White Heron Castle because of its amazing white appearance and bird-like shape. It’s the largest and most visited castle in Japan and has never been damaged in an earthquake or war. Himeji Castle has maintained its current structure since the early 17th Century. The castle’s complex design with maze-like paths and baileys was intended to tie up the attacking forces. As a UNESCO World Heritage site, Himeji Castle is the finest and most pristine example of historic sites in Japan from the feudal period.

Matsumoto Castle, Matsumoto

Matsumoto Castle stands out in stark contrast to Himeji's pristine white elegance by being a striking "Crow Castle" with its black lacquer and wood paneling. Its main keep is one of the oldest in the country, dating back to the 1600s. What makes Matsumoto particularly special is that it is a flatland castle built for practicality and defense, not built upon a mountain like many others. Its dramatic, brooding aesthetic against the mountainous Japanese Alps is making it one of the most picturesque historic places in Japan.
