Apply for german citizenship

Share

For many Indians residing in Germany, the leap from considering settling permanently to actually establishing a life and integrating fully is often with the added benefit of having a German passport. Being a German citizen means a commitment to participation in the social and economic fabric of Germany, one of Europe’s continental powerhouses, beyond travel wherever you choose. If you are an Indian national, and thinking about how to apply German citizenship, we will outline below the critical steps, requirements, and step-by-step approach to understanding the entire journey.

Why Consider German Citizenship?

Before we start explaining the process, let’s understand why and what makes German citizenship so desirable. Here are the reasons:

  • Travel 190+ countries without a visa.

  • Freedom of movement within the EU.

  • Right to vote and run for the office.

  • Right to apply for government jobs and scholarships.

  • Complete security and pension rights.

  • Stronger political and legal protection.

How Indian Citizens can Apply for German Citizenship?

Here are the most common routes when applying for a German citizenship:

  • German citizenship by birth.

  • German citizenship by naturalization.

  • German citizenship by marriage.

  • German citizenship by adoption.

German Citizenship by Birth

Citizenship laws in Germany do not confer citizenship through jus soli, but some exceptions apply, in which children born on German territory to non-German parents may receive citizenship, but this only occurs when one of the parents has legal residence in Germany for at least the previous five years.

German Citizenship by Naturalization

The preferred method for Indians to apply for German citizenship is typically through naturalization.

You will need to be a resident in Germany for at least five years, understand Basic German Law, and want to fit into the country’s culture and society.

Another key requirement is the German language. You must be able to speak and write German fluently.

To prove your skills in German, you will have to pass the integration test (Einbürgerungstest), as required by authorities. The integration test gives evidence of your knowledge of the German language, society, and legal system. This is an important step in the naturalization process, and passing shows that you intend to settle into German society.

German Citizenship by Marriage

The regulations for citizenship in Germany afford legal citizenship to individuals who marry German citizens or naturalized citizens.

If you are trying to obtain German citizenship through marriage, you must:

  • Provide evidence of basic German language skills.

  • Show evidence of being able to support your family or proof that your partner is providing support.

This regulation is important for newly married Indians who are naturalized citizens and are obtaining citizenship for their spouse.

German Citizenship by Adoption

You may receive German citizenship through the legal adoption of children. Upon completing the legally required adoption procedures, both the adoptive parents and the children automatically receive German citizenship.

Eligibility Requirements for Applying German Citizenship for Indian Residents

As an Indian, there are certain eligibility requirements you must meet to become a German citizen. Listed below are some eligibility requirements for Indian applicants applying for German citizenship through naturalization.

  • Minimum stay: You must maintain legal residence status in Germany for a minimum of 5 years from the prior requirement of 8 years. The time frame is calculated from the date you received your first official residence permit.

  • Language skills: You must have conversational German language skills. Additionally, you should pass a language test as part of the application process.

  • Financial stability: You must be financially well-off with a consistent job or self-employed business to support your family without needing any government assistance.

  • No criminal record: You should not be implicated in any criminal activity or investigation.

  • Integration to German society: You must be willing to integrate well with the surrounding culture while contributing positively to society.

  • Knowledge of German laws:  The basic law (Grundgesetz) is one requirement of German citizenship for applicants to have a basic knowledge of, to score well on, and to become the "ideal" citizen of Germany.

  1. Eligibility Requirements for Obtaining Citizenship in Germany

The first step is to review your eligibility requirements and the criteria by which you are eligible for citizenship. Please note, that the citizenship models are different and consequently, the eligibility requirements may be different.  Your eligibility criteria needs to demonstrate that you meet eligibility requirements alone.

  2. Paperwork Requirements to Apply for Citizenship in Germany

You will need to collect the necessary paperwork for obtaining citizenship documentation. This includes, but is not limited to, birth certificates, proof of residency, proof of financial standing in the form of a tax statement, banking statement, and proof of language skills. You may also be asked to provide a marriage certificate, if applicable, or adoption paperwork, if applicable, and in addition to experience from work documents.

  3. Submit the Application for Naturalization in Germany

The application can be obtained from another local authority, city council, regional district office or your nearest immigration office. First, check everything you need to know and then fill out the application. Make sure to double-check everything before you submit.

  4. Need to Take a Citizenship Test!

You will need to take a citizenship test to show your knowledge of German culture, laws, and society. The test consists of 33 multiple choice type questions. You need to get 17 questions correct in order to pass the test.

  5. Pay Application Fees

Depending on your model of citizenship you will need to pay a minimum application fee when you submit your application. The application fees in the model for naturalization is EUR 225 for adults and EUR 55.

  6.  Await your German Citizenship Certificate

The process of acquiring German citizenship will take several months for your application to be processed. Please be patient while the bureaucrats are determining your application.

You will be advised if your application was successful, and you will be invited to the oath ceremony. You will take an oath of allegiance to Germany and receive your German Citizenship Certificate at that time.

Quickest Way to Get German Citizenship

If you are an Indian national, the quickest way to German citizenship is employment-based immigration, regardless of skills.

If you are in Germany on a work visa, you can settle for the long term, obtain a residence permit without a hassle, and work independently.

Most importantly, you will speed up the eligibility requirements.
