Indian passport holders require a Newzealand Visitor Visa to enter New Zealand. The New Zealand travel visa costs NZD 441 (around ₹25,000) and allows a stay of up to 6 months with a multiple entry or a single entry of 9 months. The processing takes around 3 weeks. Travel insurance is not a visa requirement but Immigration New Zealand strongly recommends it and it is important to have for costs of treatment overseas. There is no reciprocal health agreement between India and New Zealand.

Do Indians Need a Visa for New Zealand?

Yes. Indian passport holders are not eligible for New Zealand's Visa Waiver Programme or the NZeTA electronic travel authority. Every Indian traveller must apply for a New Zealand Tourist Visa before arrival. Visa on arrival is not available.

With a Visitor Visa, Indian nationals can stay for up to 6 months on multiple entry or 9 months on single entry. You cannot work during the visit, but you can study for up to 3 months.

Why Travel Insurance Matters for New Zealand?

Travel insurance is not a mandatory visa requirement for New Zealand. However, Immigration New Zealand and the New Zealand government strongly recommend it for all visitors, and there is a very specific reason for this.

New Zealand has no reciprocal healthcare agreement with India. This means Indian visitors are not entitled to subsidised healthcare under New Zealand's public health system. Private medical treatment in New Zealand is expensive. A GP consultation costs NZD 50 to NZD 150 (₹2,800-₹8,500). An emergency room visit can cost NZD 500 to NZD 1,000 (₹28,500-₹57,000). A hospitalisation for a few days can cost NZD 5,000 to NZD 20,000 (₹2,86,000-₹11,43,000). Without travel insurance, every rupee of that cost falls on the traveller.

New Zealand does have the Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC) scheme, which covers treatment costs for injuries caused by accidents for all people in New Zealand, including visitors. However, ACC does not cover illness, pre-existing conditions, or medical evacuation. A traveller who develops a cardiac event, a severe infection, or requires emergency surgery for a non-accident cause is entirely reliant on their own funds or travel insurance for the cost.

Travel insurance for New Zealand should cover:

  • Medical treatment for illness and injury

  • Emergency hospitalisation

  • Medical evacuation or repatriation

  • Trip cancellation and curtailment

  • Lost or delayed baggage

  • Personal liability

Niva Bupa Travel Insurance for New Zealand

For Indian travellers visiting New Zealand, Niva Bupa's international travel insurance plans provide medical emergency coverage, hospitalisation, and trip disruption protection across 150-plus countries including New Zealand.

Given that New Zealand has no reciprocal health agreement with India and that medical costs there are significantly higher than in India, travel insurance is the only financial protection available for illness-related medical events during the trip. A Niva Bupa travel plan ensures that a medical event in Auckland or Queenstown does not result in a bill that wipes out the savings that funded the trip.

Conclusion

New Zealand requires a Visitor Visa for every Indian traveller, applied online before departure at a cost of NZD 441. Processing takes approximately 3 weeks, and preparation of financial proof, ties to India, and a strong cover letter significantly improves the 75% approval rate Indian applicants currently see.

Travel insurance is not a visa requirement but it is a practical necessity. New Zealand offers no free healthcare to Indian visitors outside the ACC accident scheme, making medical travel insurance the only coverage available for illness or non-accident medical emergencies during the trip.
