Indians travelling to the USA need a passport, B1/B2 visa documentation, currency within customs, and climate-appropriate packing. Travel insurance is not mandatory, but it is strongly recommended for the trip.

Quick Read

•Indian travellers need a valid passport, a B1/B2 visa, and supporting travel documents before flying to the USA.
•You can carry up to $3,000 in foreign currency from India. Higher amounts must follow RBI and customs rules.
•You need to declare funds that exceed $10,000 when entering the USA to comply with U.S. Customs requirements.
•Keep both physical and digital copies of important documents, including your passport, visa, travel insurance, and accommodation details.
•Travel insurance is not mandatory for the USA, but it can protect you against expensive medical emergencies, trip disruptions, and baggage loss.

A trip to America is not exactly like a trip to Dubai or Bangkok. The visa process for America takes weeks, and sometimes months. It also involves an in-person interview at the US consulate. Having a proper checklist to go through before you fly out on your trip is always a good idea, as it can help you prepare for emergencies and unexpected situations. This blog provides an overview of what Indian tourists and families should have ready before departure, including documents, money, packing, insurance, and airport etiquette.

How Much Cash and Money Can Indian Travellers Carry to the USA?

Money rules are one of the most confusing parts of any USA travel checklist, mainly because there are two separate sets of limits to track.

Rules When Leaving India

  • RBI and Indian customs allow you to carry up to $3,000 in foreign currency (such as USD) per person. Any other money should be in the form of cards, bank drafts, or traveller’s cheques.

  • If you carry more than $5,000 in cash, or more than $10,000 in cash plus traveller’s cheques, you need to declare it to Indian customs on departure. This is usually done through a currency declaration form.

  • Cash in INR has its own restrictions. You can carry upto ₹25,000 when flying out of India. However, amounts exceeding this amount are not allowed without specific approval from the RBI.

  • Under the Liberalised Remittance Scheme (LRS), you can remit or take abroad up upto 250,000 per financial year for specific purposes, such as tourism studies. However, all of this is only approved if it is through banking/forex channels and not physical cash.

Rules When Entering the USA

  • The USA does not have a hard restriction on how much money you can bring into the country.

  • However, if the total amount (cash + traveller’s cheques + money orders) is more than $10,000, then you are legally required to declare it to U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) when you land.

  • The declaration is usually done using a FinCEN Form 105, which is available online or at the port of entry.

  • Remember that the $10,000 threshold is an aggregate amount. This means that it applies to the total amount a person or a family/group is carrying.

What To Pack for a Trip to the USA from India?

Packing smart is not about cramming everything you think you may need into your suitcase. It is much more about focusing on your destination’s climate, the electronics you actually need, and your health needs. This is a checklist that you can use when you are preparing for your travel:

Clothing and Footwear

The weather varies a lot across the US. This is why it is important to check the weather and temperature of your specific destination before you pack. These are some things you should pack:

  • Layered clothing.

  • Winter jackets if you are travelling to the Northeast or Midwest.

  • Comfortable walking shoes.

  • One or two formal/fancy outfits.

Electronics and Adaptors

The US has a different plug type and voltage compared to India. So make sure to pack your electronics carefully before you leave home:

  • Carry a Type A/B adaptor because Indian plugs do not fit into US sockets

  • Avoid carrying high-wattage appliances like hair straighteners without a voltage converter.

  • Pack a universal power bank because public charging points are not always easy to find.

Medicines and Toiletries

A lot of travellers tend to forget to pack medicines and toiletries. These are some things that you should keep in mind:

  • Carry a doctor’s prescription letter for any medicine that you are packing.

  • Keep medicines in their original packaging with labels.

  • Make sure to pack toiletries below 100ml in your carry-on.

Do You Need Travel Insurance for a USA trip from India?

No travel checklist for USA is complete without sorting insurance, even though it is not legally required. Travel insurance in the USA is not a legal requirement for B1/B2 visa holders. However, just because it is not a legal requirement does not make it any less important. This is why you should consider purchasing travel insurance before travelling to the USA:

  • US healthcare costs are among the highest in the world. A single visit to the ER or even a short hospital stay can cost you thousands of dollars.

  • Indian domestic health insurance policies usually do not extend their coverage for overseas travel.

  • A good travel insurance plan also provides coverage for trip cancellations, lost baggage, and flight delays.

To Sum it Up

Working through a proper USA travel checklist makes the whole trip a lot less stressful. Make sure you have your documents in time so your visa is not delayed. Also, make sure your money is split carefully between cash and cards, in line with the rules. Another important thing to keep in mind is protecting yourself and your family if something unexpected happens.
