Introduction
World Homeopathy Day is celebrated each year on 10th April to commemorate the birth anniversary of Dr. Christian Friedrich Samuel Hahnemann and his contribution to the world of medicine. Born in Paris in 1755, Hahnemann is well known as the founding father of this branch of medicine.
Apart from paying tribute to the founder, this day also signifies the importance of homeopathy medicine and its ability in treating some of the deep-rooted diseases. In addition, the day is aimed at spreading awareness among people and making homeopathy a renowned practice of medicine around the world.
Let us take a detailed look at the World Homeopathy Day 2023 theme - its history, significance, and some important facts about homeopathy:
What is Homoeopathy?
Homeopathy is an alternative form of medicine that originated almost 200 years ago in Germany. It uses plants and herbs to treat diseases or health conditions like asthma, food allergies, arthritis, high blood pressure, dermatitis, ear infections, stress, and anxiety. The foundation of homeopathic medicine is based on two theories: The first theory revolves around the 'like cures like' concept, which means that an illness can be treated by a substance that shows similar symptoms in a healthy person. While the second theory focuses on minimum medication doses. It is believed in homeopathy that a minimum dose is more efficient in treating diseases.
Other significant principles of homeopathic medicine include enhancing the body's natural healing process, providing one remedy based on similar symptoms for multiple diseases, and offering medicines based on an individual's symptoms and bodily requirements.
Homeopathy focuses not on reducing the symptoms of a disease but also on finding its root cause. It helps in treating the disease to the core and preventing the disease from recurring in the future. In addition to providing medicines, homeopathic doctors recommend their patients to focus on a healthy diet, proper eating habits, daily exercise, and reducing stress.
History of Homeopathy
Homeopathy has been practiced in India since the early 19th century. It was initially started in Bengal by a few German homeopathic practitioners and gradually spread to other parts of the country. Dr. M.L. Sirkar was the first Indian practitioner who started providing homeopathic medicines to patients. The first homeopathic journal was also edited by him in 1868. This was followed by the setting up of the Calcutta Homoeopathic Medical College in 1881.
Further, when more practitioners started entering the field of homeopathy, the Central Legislative Assembly passed a resolution in 1937 to introduce homeopathic treatments in Indian hospitals. A few decades later, in 1973, the Homoeopathy Central Council Act was passed by the Parliament for the regulation of homeopathic medicine in India. Today, there are more than 2.5 Lac licensed homeopathic doctors in India.
Significance of World Homeopathy Day in India

The day provides an opportunity to the government, policymakers, and other stakeholders in the field of homeopathy to come together and discuss future developments, opportunities, research in the field of homeopathy and how to improve infrastructure to promote homeopathic medicine. The Ministry of AYUSH organizes a conference to commemorate World Homoeopathic Day.
