Introduction
International Liver Day is celebrated every year on the 19th of April. The purpose of this day is to spread awareness about liver-related conditions across the world. The liver is considered the most complex organ of the human body and is responsible for digestion, metabolism, immunity, and the storage of nutrients within the body. Therefore, it is quite important to keep your liver healthy. Let us read about it in detail:
Significance of World Liver Day
Liver problems have become more common in recent times. Chronic liver diseases like Cirrhosis have become the 11th most common cause of death worldwide while Liver Cancer is the 16th leading cause of death globally. According to a 2019 report by the Journal of Hepatology, over 2 million people worldwide die every year due to liver diseases. Out of these, 1 million people suffer from liver cirrhosis and the remaining people suffer from hepatitis and hepatocellular carcinoma.
A negative lifestyle and poor eating habits are associated with an increased risk of liver conditions, thus, it is important to raise awareness about it. World Liver Day is observed to encourage the government, healthcare practitioners, and other stakeholders to enhance the quality of research and treatment for liver diseases. Last year on World Liver Day, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare organized a virtual conference and emphasized that the liver is the most complex body organ which performs many crucial functions within the body. It was also stated that there is no cure for Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) and the only way to prevent the disease is to focus on your health and make positive lifestyle changes.
Types of Liver Diseases
Many conditions can affect your liver. Here’re the 4 most common types of liver diseases:
Liver Cirrhosis:
Liver cirrhosis is a critical condition that leads to liver damage. In this disease, the healthy liver tissues are replaced by scar tissues and the liver is permanently damaged. Liver cirrhosis happens at a later stage when liver conditions or diseases are left untreated.
Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease :
This condition refers to the accumulation of liver fat in people who drink little or no alcohol. Over time, scar tissues start developing in the liver which leads to cirrhosis if left untreated.
Hepatitis C :
This is a viral infection that causes inflammation in the liver. Hepatitis C is caused due to infected blood transfusion of infected needles. The disease causes symptoms like fatigue, fever, and muscle pain.
Cholestasis:
In cholestasis liver disease, the production of bile gets reduced. It leads to an increase in bilirubin levels and can cause jaundice.
The most common causes of liver disease are excess consumption of alcohol, obesity, type-2 diabetes, tattoos or piercings with an infected needle, and infected blood transfusion. One can reduce the risk of getting liver diseases by following a healthy lifestyle. Also, it is recommended to go for annual health checkups or liver disease screening tests if you have a family history of liver diseases. It is also crucial to get vaccinated for hepatitis.
Health Insurance for Liver Diseases
In India, liver problems have increased due to poor lifestyle and unhealthy eating habits. The cost of treating liver disease is also very high. Thus, it is important to have adequate health insurance or critical illness insurance plan in place so that you don’t need to be concerned about the rising medical expenses while getting the best treatment possible.
