Medical costs in India have been rising every year, and a single hospitalisation can put serious pressure on your savings. That's why health insurance is a financial necessity for most households. Many people don’t know that a health insurance premium doesn't just protect their health but also reduce their taxable income.
Section 80D of the Income Tax Act gives you a direct tax deduction on the health insurance premiums you pay for yourself and your family.
In this blog, let’s know about the latest 80D deduction limit, who can claim it, which family members are covered, and what documents you'll need to keep ready when filing your return.
What is Section 80D?
Section 80D is in the Income Tax Act of India, which makes it possible for individuals to get their health insurance policy premium costs deducted from their income tax payments. It is meant to make individuals appreciate the importance of investing in health insurance policies.
Latest 80D Deduction Limits for Health Insurance
Here is a detailed description of each situation where deductions are applicable:
Maximum Deduction for Self, Spouse, and Dependent Children (Under 60 Years)
In case the insured individuals are under the age of 60 years and premiums are paid by the individual, his/her spouse, and dependent children, then the maximum deduction claimed would be up to ₹25,000 per financial year.
Deduction Limit for Parents Below 60 Years
If you're also paying health insurance premiums for your parents and they're below 60 years of age, you can claim an additional deduction of up to ₹25,000 on top of your own ₹25,000 limit. This brings your total potential 80D deduction to ₹50,000 in a single financial year.
Deduction Limit for Senior Citizen Parents (60 Years and Above)
When your parents are 60 years or older, the deduction limit on their premium jumps to ₹ 50,000. So if you're below 60 but your parents are senior citizens, family floater plan your total 80D deduction limit for the year works out to ₹ 75,000: ₹ 25,000 for yourself and your family, plus ₹. 50,000 for your senior citizen parents.
Deduction Limit When Both the Taxpayer and Parents are Senior Citizens
If you are over 60 years of age and have elderly parents as well, then both limits will be enhanced. You would be able to claim ₹ 50,000 towards the premium paid on behalf of your family members, along with ₹50,000 towards the premium paid on behalf of your parents. Hence, ₹1,00,000 is the maximum limit of deduction available under this provision.
Deduction for Preventive Health Check-Ups
Within whichever overall limit applies to you, ₹5,000 can be specifically attributed to preventive health check-up expenses. This sub-limit applies to check-ups for yourself, your spouse, dependent children, and parents combined. Unlike premium payments, preventive health check-up costs can be paid in cash and still qualify. But this ₹5,000 sits inside your total limit, not over and above it.
Who Is Covered Under Section 80D?
The deduction under Section 80D extends beyond just your own policy. Here's exactly what each covered category means for your claim.
Self
Your own health insurance premium is the starting point of any 80D claim. The policy must be in your name, and the premium must be paid by you. Whether you hold a basic hospitalisation plan or a comprehensive cover with critical illness riders, the full premium paid qualifies toward your deduction limit, up to the applicable ceiling for your age group.
Spouse
Premiums paid for your spouse's health insurance plan are included within the same ₹ 25,000 limit that covers you and your dependent children. Your spouse doesn't need a separate policy. If both of you are covered under a single , the total premium paid for that plan counts toward your combined deduction. There's no need to split the amount between the two of you.
Dependent Children
Health insurance premiums paid for your dependent children also fall within your personal deduction limit. If your child is financially independent and files their own tax return, you can't claim their premium under your 80D deduction limit. But for children who are still financially dependent on you, their coverage adds directly to your eligible claim amount without reducing your overall limit.
Parents
Premiums paid for your parents' health insurance are treated as a completely separate deduction from your own. This means you get an additional ₹ 25,000 deduction if your parents are below 60, over and above what you claim for yourself. You can claim this even if your parents are not financially dependent on you. The policy simply needs to be one for which you are paying the premium.
Senior Citizen Parents
When your parents cross 60 years of age, their deduction limit increases to ₹50,000. This applies whether or not they have their own income. If your senior citizen parents aren't covered by any health insurance policy, you can still claim up to ₹50,000 for medical expenses incurred on their treatment. This provision recognises that older parents often face higher and more frequent medical costs that deserve greater tax relief.
Final Thoughts
Health insurance does two things at once. It protects your family from the financial weight of medical emergencies, and it reduces your taxable income every year. The deduction limits are generous, especially when senior citizen parents are involved, and the paperwork is manageable if you stay organised.
Don't wait until the last week of March to think about this. The tax benefit is real, but only if the right policies are in place before the financial year closes.

FAQ
1. Can I claim 80D if I pay my parents' premium in cash?
No. Premium payments made in cash don't qualify for the 80D deduction, regardless of who the policy is for. Payment must be made through a non-cash mode such as net banking, UPI, cheque, credit card, or debit card.
2. What if my senior citizen parents don't have any health insurance policy at all?
You can still claim a deduction of up to ₹50,000 for actual medical expenses incurred on their treatment, even without an insurance policy in place. This provision exists specifically because older individuals sometimes struggle to get insured. Keep all original bills, pharmacy receipts, and doctor consultation invoices as supporting documents.
3. Does the 80D deduction apply under the new tax regime?
No, it doesn't. Section 80D deductions are only available under the old tax regime. If you've opted for the new tax regime, you give up most deductions, including 80D, in exchange for lower flat tax rates. Before deciding which regime to follow, compare your total eligible deductions under the old regime against the tax savings the new regime offers.
4. Can both spouses claim the 80D deduction separately if they both pay premiums?
Yes, absolutely. If both you and your spouse are salaried and each pays premiums independently, you can both claim the deduction separately in your individual returns. For example, if you pay the premium for a family floater covering both of you, you claim it. But if your spouse separately pays a premium for their own top-up plan, they can claim that amount independently. Just make sure the same premium isn't claimed twice.
5. Is the ₹5,000 preventive health check-up limit available separately over and above the main deduction?
No, and this is one of the most common misunderstandings around Section 80D. The Rs. 5,000 limit for preventive health check-ups sits inside your overall deduction limit, not on top of it. So if your total limit is ₹25,000 and you spend ₹5,000 on check-ups, your remaining room for premium deduction is ₹20,000. The two don't add up to Rs. 30,000. They share the same ceiling.
6. Can I claim the 80D deduction limit if I pay health insurance premiums for my in-laws?
No, Section 80D doesn't cover in-laws. The deduction is strictly limited to premiums paid for yourself, your spouse, your dependent children, and your own parents. If your spouse is paying the premium for their parents, they can claim that deduction separately under their own return. Each individual claims the deduction for their own immediate family, not extended relatives.
7. Can I claim 80D if I pay the premium for my sibling's health insurance?
No, Section 80D doesn't cover siblings. The deduction is strictly limited to premiums paid for yourself, your spouse, dependent children, and your own parents. Even if your sibling is financially dependent on you, their premium doesn't qualify under this section. If you want to support a sibling's health coverage, that's a personal choice, but it won't reduce your tax liability under Section 80D.
