As the world moves towards digitalisation, and travelling becomes more accessible than ever before, there have been numerous developments made to enhance the convenience of travellers. With more than 120 countries already on board and India expected to follow suit, one such recent development in the world of travelling is called an E-passport.
Given the Government of India’s commitment to Digital India, the Ministry of External Affairs has stated that Indians will soon receive E-Passports.
But what are they, what do they do, how does it work, and how can you get one?
What is an E-passport?
An E-passport is essentially a regular passport outfitted with a chip that contains several crucial information about the holder. Just like a regular passport, it is the only internationally recognised proof of identity and citizenship, allowing entry to various countries. These chips hold data including the name, date of birth, and biometric information of the holder among other things. Using an E-passport is beneficial for travellers in ensuring higher security and transparency in travel documentation.
While all official (White) and diplomatic (Maroon) passports have been E-passports since 2008, the Government of India in 2022 stated that regular citizens will soon be able to avail themselves of E-passports.
What is the use of an E-passport?
The E-passport uses its embedded microchip to electronically store and use the antenna attached to the back of the passport to transfer relevant requested data to the gates. This microchip can store up to 60 kilobytes of data including personal, demographic, and biometric information of the holder.
Although it is currently not available to the general public, the main draw of an E-passport is the smooth transfer of passengers thus avoiding long queues and waiting periods. Additionally, this passport is supposed to be much more secure with enhanced features to prevent fraudulent activities.

How to get an E-passport India?
It was during the Union Budget 2022 when the Union Finance Minister, Smt Nirmala Sitharaman announced making E-passports available for the general public. Following this announcement, Union External Affairs Minister Dr S. Jaishankar announced the launch of these updated passports during the Passport Seva Divas, on 24th June 2023.
The government is expected to begin the E-passport upgradation starting in Bengaluru. So while currently, E-passports might still take a while to reach ordinary citizens, individuals can get E-passports by applying online using the Passport Seva portal.
Once on the Passport Seva website, you can click on either re-issuance of your passport or apply for a fresh passport. The next steps are similar to applying for any other passport requiring passport application, booking an appointment for a personal interview, and police verification.
Conclusion
Regardless of these recent developments, passports are essential instruments that allow travellers to explore the world. Whether you are travelling for business, leisure, or education, E-passports are expected to make the travel experience a lot more convenient and secure. However, while a passport is a gateway to foreign travel, you may still be exposed to the impact of several risks. It is thus vital for you to safeguard your trips from various risks associated with travelling using international travel insurance to ensure a safe and secure journey. Whether it is trip cancellation, missed connection, loss of checked-in baggage, medical emergency, loss of passport, or anything else, buy the best travel insurance and travel with peace of mind.
