Apply for France Transit Visa

Summary

Based on the latest update, Indian passport holders do not require a France transit visa when transiting through mainland French airports anymore. This is based on the 10th April 2026 decree and applies only if you stay airside, have a confirmed onward ticket, and have your baggage checked through to your final destination.

If Paris is on your connecting flight route this year, then there is good news for you. From 10th April, Indian passport holders are no longer required to have an Airport Transit Visa (ATV) when transiting through mainland French airports. The rule that once required Indians to hold a separate visa just to sit airside at Charles de Gaulle has been lifted.

However, a “no transit visa” does not necessarily equal “no rules”. Many travellers are booking Paris layovers without knowing what the exemptions actually are or what documents they require. This blog covers the conditions, exceptions, and what to carry regardless of your visa status.

Do Indians Still Need a France Transit Visa in 2026?

No. As of 10th April 20206, if you are an Indian national who has an ordinary passport, then you do not need a France Transit Visa. However, this is only applicable if you remain strictly only in the international transit area of a French airport. Indian travellers were previously required to have a France Transit Visa, even if they were only passing through a French airport such as Charles de Gaulle (CDG) for a very short period of time. It has since been changed following President Macron's visit to India in February 2026, during which he removed the 2010 decree requiring Indians to hold a visa and supporting documents.

If you are still confused, then these are some common transit scenarios to check:

Scenario

Visa Required?

Single booking +  bags checked through +  airside

No

Separate tickets + bags not confirmed as checked through

Verify with airline before flying

Changing airports (for example,  CDG to Orly)

Yes, Schengen visa required

Exiting transit zone for hotel stay outside airport

Yes, Schengen visa required

France as first Schengen entry before onward Schengen travel

Yes, Schengen visa required

What are the Eligibility Criteria for Visa-Free Transit in France?

The exemption only applies to you if you:

  • Hold an ordinary Indian passport (not a diplomatic or official passport)

  • Stay airside for the entire duration of your stop.

  • You have a confirmed onward ticket to a destination outside of France

  • Your bags are connected through to your final destination

What Does Staying Airside Actually Mean?

Staying airside basically means never passing through an immigration checkpoint and never technically stepping onto French soil. Your journey from your arrival gate to your departure gate should be entirely within the secure area accessible only to international travellers. You should also not pass through passport control or need to collect any checked baggage between flights.

Most major French airports, such as CDG’s Terminal 2, are well designed to ensure a smooth transit. As long as your flights are at connected terminals so you do not exit, you will stay airside throughout.

Why Should You Check Your Baggage Details Carefully?

This is one of the most overlooked conditions, and the reason that a lot of travellers face issues. You will be required to collect your checked baggage if it has not been transferred to your final destination. When you go to the baggage claim to get your suitcase, you are entering French territory and are no longer eligible for the ATV exemption. If this happens to you, you would need a Schengen visa. Before you travel, check with your airline if your baggage is checked through to your final destination, so you are not met with unexpected surprises or delays at the airport.

The Problem with Separate Tickets

Your luggage will not be automatically checked through if you booked two flights that have separate booking numbers. If your originating airline is unable to check your luggage all the way to your destination, you will have to recheck it in France. To do this, you will have to leave the International transit area, and so you must hold a Schengen visa.

For a flight booked separately from other flights, or on different airlines and/or separate PNRs, make sure to check with the relevant airlines before your departure to see if they can offer through-check-in.  This is basically a service where your airline automatically processes your boarding and tags your checked luggage all the way to your final destination.

When Do You Still Need a Visa?

This exemption applies only to airside transits. If you have to leave the international transit zone for any reason, you will be entering France and will require a Schengen visa.

  • If you are changing flights between Paris Charles de Gaulle and Orly Airports. These are the most common transit hubs in Paris and are located on opposite ends. Travelling between them for any connecting flights would require passing through immigration and entering French soil.

  • If you have an overnight stay planned at a hotel. Even one night in a French city counts as an entry and will require an approved Schengen visa before your flight.

  • If you are entering Schengen for the first time through France. If your destination is another country within the Schengen zone, and France is your first stop, then the ATV exemption does not apply. It will require a valid Schengen visa, regardless of your layover duration.

  • If you have a diplomatic or an official passport, then the rules are different for you, and the regulations for an ATV might vary.

In any of these cases, you will need to apply for France transit visa through the French consulate before your departure.

Rules for Diplomatic and Official Passport Holders:

The 10th April, 2026 amendment to the ATV applies only to ordinary passport holders and has had no impact on diplomatic and official passport holders.

Diplomatic Passports:

  • If you have a diplomatic passport, then you usually do not need an airport transit visa at all, because you are considered under diplomatic privileges. You are allowed to stay within the international transit zone in French airports if you are going ahead to a third country and are not entering French territory.

  • When in transit, you need to remain only in the transit zone. This means no immigration, no entry into France, and a confirmed ticket out of France. If you need to change your airport or re-check your luggage, then you will need further approval, such as a Schengen Visa.

  • If you intend to leave the transit zone and enter France, then you can usually do so under a visa-free short stay, because of bilateral or diplomatic agreements. You can also sometimes opt for a simplified short-stay visa.

Official Passports:

  • Like diplomatic passport holders, official passport holders generally do not need an ATV when remaining within the international transit area and have confirmed outward tickets that do not require changing airports or baggage recheck.

  • If you do need to exit the transit zone and enter France, you will be covered under the visa-free short stay of the India-France Agreements about official passports (allowed for official visits) or by a simplified short stay visa.

What Should You Carry Even Without a France Transit Visa?

While a visa is not required, you still should be prepared for any situation while travelling. If something is missing or wrong when your documents are checked in India, then you will typically not even be allowed to board the flight.

Your documents are checked at the boarding gate in India, and if something is amiss, then you will not be allowed to board. If your trip itinerary does not require you to follow French transit visa rules, then you need to be prepared and give yourself enough time to process your documents.

This is a checklist you can use:

  • A confirmed onward boarding pass or booking confirmation.

  • A valid visa for your final destination.

  • Proof of baggage through-check-in

  • Travel insurance for the entire journey.

To Sum It Up

The removal of the France Transit Visa for Indian travellers transiting through France is straightforward. For most Indians flying via France with a single ticket, checked bags, and plans to remain only airside, this means no ATV applications, no further paperwork, and no consulate visit.

However, since international travel is often very unpredictable, travel insurance for the entire journey is a really important requirement. While it is not necessary for visa applications, it strengthens your application and also helps protect you during your travel. It can save you a significant amount of money in situations of missed connections, flight cancellations, or unexpected medical situations.

We at Niva Bupa offer travel insurance plans designed to address such concerns. Our plans provide coverage for lost baggage, delayed flights, and medical emergencies during transit. If anything goes wrong, having good coverage to protect you is helpful and ensures you are not on your own while travelling internationally.

FAQs:

How long can I stay airside in an International Transit lounge in a French airport?

There is no strict time limit. Most airports will expect you to fly onto your connecting flight within a 24-hour period.

Is a Used Single-Entry Visa an Issue for Transit Through France?

Yes, the destination-country visa needs to be unused and valid. If your final destination visa is a multiple-entry visa, you should have entries that are still valid to use. Staff in India at boarding will check your destination-country visa for this reason.

Is France’s Transit Visa Waiver Available to an Indian National Holding an OCI Card

Your final destination visa waiver depends on your passport nationality and not your OCI card status. You need to be travelling with an ordinary Indian passport to be eligible fr the exemption.

What Happens If My Connecting Flight From France to the Final Destination Gets Delayed and I Miss the Onward Flight?

As long as you stay airside in the airport and your onward flight departure is on the same day, then the exemption will still apply. If your flight has been delayed for a long duration and you need an overnight stay in the city, then a Schengen visa would be required. This is why it is important to apply for a transit visa France and check all the rules before you book your flights.
