In a day and age when the world's most recognizable sites are often flooded with visitors, there exists a whole community of travelers who are looking for something different: real seclusion and untouched authenticity.
This leads to the question: Which countries receive the fewest visitors in the world?
Finding out the least visited countries involves understanding why those countries receive relatively few visitors. The explanations usually suggest some combination of distance from more commonly traveled destinations, challenging logistics, political isolation, or simply a lack of anything for tourists to do. But for the traveler seeking adventure, these same obstacles are what make the destination worthwhile. Let's look into some of the least visited countries in the world based on data from the United Nations World Trade Organization (UNWTO) and the industry.
Least Visited Countries in the World
The Remote Island Nations of the Pacific
The vast Pacific Ocean is home to some of the most remote and, therefore, some of the least visited countries in the world.
1. Tuvalu
Annual Visitors: About 3,700 (Pre-COVID numbers)
Why is it less visited? Tuvalu is among the smallest, and one of the most remote countries on Earth. It is situated about halfway between Hawaii and Australia, comprising 9 tiny atolls. There are only a handful of flights from Fiji each week. Tuvalu is literally under the threat of existential crisis from the sea level rise (not observed in many lower-elevation countries). It would be an experience to visit a country known to be fragile, vulnerable, and remote. To visit Tuvalu is to experience unreal traditional culture as well as stark beauty in the landscape.
2. Kiribati
Annual Visitors: Roughly 4,000
Why is it less visited: Kiribati is scattered over 3.5 million square kilometers of ocean, so travelling to get around is not easy. Its main international airport is located on South Tarawa, which can be tricky to get to. Like Tuvalu, fragile and remote, Kiribati lands it firmly on the least visited list and its remoteness is attractive to travellers who want to experience atoll life and World War II history alone, without any tourism.
3. Marshall Islands
Annual Visitors: Approximately 6,000
Why is it less visited: Infamous for its history of nuclear testing and envious dive locations at Bikini Atoll (which requires a special permission), the Marshall Islands is not a leisure vacation destination. It has simple infrastructure, and tourism does not factor heavily into the economy. It remains a place for serious divers and historically inclined travelers.
Isolated Nations
Outside of the Pacific, there are other nations which are off the beaten path for political and geographical reasons.
4. Turkmenistan
Annual Visitors: Estimated at 7,000 - 9,000
Why is it less visited: This Central Asian country is one of the most closed societies in the world. In order to visit it, you need a visa which is also notoriously difficult to get, usually associated with a guided tour. However, once you get there, you're treated to some bizarre tourists such as the burning Darvaza Gas Crater (the "Door to Hell") and an entire city of white marble in the capital city of Ashgabat. The closed environment has made it one of the most interesting least visited countries.
5. Nauru
Yearly Visitors: Around 160 (Data from before the pandemic, often regarded as the least visited)
Why is it less visited: Nauru is the world’s smallest island nation and is described as "The least visited country on Earth." Tourism access is virtually limited to a finite number of flights from Brisbane, Australia (only once per week). Nauru has its history in phosphate mining and most of the landscape is ravaged through mining of its interior. There is little tourist infrastructure, and the trip to Nauru can be a unique but sometimes difficult experience.
6. Somalia
Yearly Visitors: Very unreliable data but extremely low.
Why is it less visited: Somalia has decades of conflict and political instability that make it one of the most dangerous and inaccessible countries to enter. There is some stability in the semi-autonomous regions of Somaliland and Puntland and a trickle of adventurous travelers can be found throughout, but Somalia, as a whole, is not a place one would visit for mass tourism. The extreme safety problems are a complete deterrent.
Reasons to Visit the Least Visited Countries
Going to one of the least visited countries is not going to be for everybody. You are not going to find any five star resorts or highly travelled tourist routes in these countries. What you will find will be:
Real Cultural exchanges: There are so few visitors that your presence is a novelty. It is easier and more likely you will engage in meaningful interactions with locals.
Unspoiled environments: From the unbroken coral reefs of Kiribati to the empty deserts of Turkmenistan, you are going to see places where the tourist industry has not yet proliferated.
The best bragging rights: It brings you satisfaction to share stories about being in a place that few are even able to place on a map.
Challenges and Ethical Considerations
Traveling to the least visited countries in the world requires significant responsibility.
Logistical Complexities: Flights tend to be infrequent and expensive. Places to stay are sparse as it is a means of travel within the country.
Visa Requirements: Securing a visa can be a complicated, time-consuming and expensive process, sometimes requiring an invitation letter and detailed itinerary.
Cultural Awareness: Visitors need to be hyper aware of local customs, clothing, and laws. In many of the least visited countries, taking pictures of government buildings or military buildings is prohibited.
Economic Considerations: It is important that your dollars are staying in the community. One of the best ways to ensure this is to travel with a local guide and stay in locally owned guesthouses.
