It happens when the body overresponds to some stimulus, such as emotional distress, pain, or standing for a long time.

 

This reaction is controlled by the vagus nerve, a vital part of the parasympathetic nervous system. If overstimulated, it instructs the heart to slow and the blood vessels to expand, shutting down blood to the brain and causing a person to pass out.

  • It should be remembered that although a vagal attack may seem like a panic attack, the mechanism is quite different. It's not anxiety, but overcompensation by the vagus nerve, which leads to fainting.

  • Dizziness or light-headedness
