The Tax Benefits of Different Types of Health Insurance Plans

Tax benefits

Health insurance is becoming increasingly important for people in India as medical expenses are rising rapidly. In addition to providing financial security in case of illness or injury, health plans offer several tax benefits to individuals. In this blog, we will explore the different types of health plans available in India and the taxation benefits they offer.

Healthcare Insurance Plans: Types and Tax Benefits

Health plans offer several taxation benefits in India, and individuals can claim tax deductions on the premium paid towards the individual, family floater, critical illness, and group health plans. These plans and the corresponding tax implications are discussed below:

Individual Healthcare Insurance Plans

Individual health plans are policies that cover a single person against the risk of medical expenses. These plans can be purchased by individuals for themselves or for their families. The premiums paid towards such plans are eligible for health insurance tax benefit 80D.

According to Section 80D, an individual can claim a tax deduction of up to ₹25,000 on the premium paid towards an individual health insurance plan for themselves, their spouse and dependent children. An additional deduction of ₹25,000 can be claimed on the premium paid towards a health plan for their parents. If the parents are senior citizens (above 60 years of age), the deduction limit is increased to ₹50,000.

Family Floater Healthcare Insurance Plans

Family floater health plans cover the entire family against the risk of medical expenses. These plans allow multiple members of a family to be covered under a single policy. The premiums paid towards family floater health plans are also eligible for tax deductions under Section 80D.

The tax deduction limit for family floater health plans is similar to that of individual plans. An individual can claim a tax deduction of up to ₹25,000 on the premium paid towards a family floater plan that covers themselves, their spouse and dependent children. An additional deduction of ₹25,000 can be claimed on the premium paid towards a plan that covers their parents. If the parents are senior citizens, the deduction limit is increased to ₹50,000.

Critical Illness Insurance Plans

Critical illness insurance plans are policies that cover the policyholder against specific critical illnesses such as cancer, heart attack, kidney failure, etc. The coverage provided by these plans is generally more comprehensive than regular health plans. They are also considered tax deductible health insurance plans.

The tax deduction limit for critical illness insurance plans is separate from the deduction limit for regular health plans. The amount of deduction is, however, the same, i.e. ₹25,000 for individuals (including spouse and children), an additional ₹25,000 for parents, and ₹50,000 for elderly parents.

Group Healthcare Insurance Plans

Group health  plans are policies that are purchased by employers for their employees. These plans offer coverage to all employees of an organisation under a single policy.

In the case of group health insurance plans, the tax deduction is available to the employer and not the employees. The entire premium paid by the employer towards the group health plan is eligible for tax deductions as a business expense.

Bottom Line

Health plans offer several tax benefits to individuals in India. These benefits depend on the type of health plan and the age of the insured person. Before purchasing a health insurance, it is advisable to compare different plans offered by different insurers and choose the one that offers the best coverage at an affordable premium. Niva Bupa is the right choice in this regard and additionally offers superior customer service with a high claim settlement ratio.

It is also important to note that the above-discussed tax benefits are subject to change based on the government's policies and regulations. Therefore, you must keep track of any changes in the tax laws and make necessary adjustments to your health plans to maximise the medical insurance tax benefits.
