Step 1: Rest

Pain is your body’s signal tha indicates  something is not  right. As soon as you're injured, stop the activity. Avoid putting weight on the area. Rest helps prevent further bruising and allows the healing process to begin without extra strain.

 

Step 2: Ice

Applying ice helps reduce swelling and numb pain. Use an ice pack wrapped in a towel for 15–20 minutes every few hours. Avoid direct contact with the skin. For best results, follow a 10-minute or 20-minute. Avoid icing beyond 6 hours to prevent tissue damage.

 

Step 3: Compression

Use an elastic bandage to gently wrap the injured area. This helps in  controlling  swelling. Make sure it is not  too tight. Compression supports the injury and helps maintain proper blood flow for faster recovery.

 

Step 4: Elevation

Raise the injured body part above your chest level to reduce swelling and pain. Use pillows to prop up the area, whether you're sitting or lying down. Elevation works best when combined with rest and ice. Try to keep the area elevated as much as possible during recovery.

While the RICE method works well for minor injuries, some types of swelling require medical attention. If the swelling:

  • Persists for more than a few days
  • Is severe or suddenly worsens
  • Comes with fever, redness, or warmth (possible infection)
