A health insurance plan offers several benefits and features to you. Most of these benefits cover hospitalisation expenses and essential health bills. But you can increase your health insurance benefits by choosing add-ons with your insurance plan.
Read on to know more about what add-ons are and which ones you can use for your health insurance policy.
What Are Add-Ons?
Add-on features are additional features that help enhance your health insurance coverage. They provide you with more protection against medical emergencies that may require higher expenses.
If you're looking for extra coverage without the need to invest in another policy, then choosing add-on features is the best option for you.
Benefits of Add-On Features in Health Insurance
There is no harm in getting more coverage than what is offered in your general health insurance plan. This helps you get financial assistance on several unpredictable diseases in the future that your health insurance plan might not cover.
To prevent these potential expenses from becoming a financial burden to you, you should consider going for additional coverage in the form of add-ons. In such cases, having add-on features for your health insurance helps you pay for your expenses and get treated without worrying about money. The best thing about add-on features is that they do not cost as much as a new health insurance policy.
Types of Add-On Features You Can Opt For
Now that you know what an add-on feature is and how it benefits you let us look at some add-on features that you can choose for your health insurance plan
Personal Accident Insurance
With the personal accident add-on, you get coverage in the following situations –
- Accidental death
- Permanent complete disablement – loss of limbs, hearing, sight, and speech
- Permanent partial disablement – failure of one leg, arm, eye, or ear
- Temporary total disablement – fractures in limbs and temporary blindness
You can top up your policy with a personal accident cover. This helps you get coverage in case of the accidents mentioned above. It will keep you ready for several scenarios without incurring a financial burden.
The top-up amount for the personal accident cover is usually in the range of Rs. 5 lakhs and Rs. 2 crores but will vary depending on the policy and company you choose.
Critical Illness Insurance
The critical illness cover provides you with a lump sum amount once you have been diagnosed with a critical illness included in the list. The number of acute illnesses covered under this add-on feature differs from one insurance provider to another. Some provide cover for about 10 to 15 ailments, while others can cover around 38 ailments.
No matter what the amount is, you will get the lump sum cover amount upon the diagnosis of your illness. Before opting for a critical illness cover, be sure to ask your provider which critical illnesses or ailments are covered under their add-on feature.
Hospital Cash
The hospital cash add-on provides you with a daily amount that helps the policyholder pay for medical or other hospital-related expenses during hospitalisation.
The daily allowance will be based on the insurance plan. You can use this daily allowance for regular medical bills, minor accidents, illnesses, or as a blanket cover.
You will only receive this amount on the days that you are hospitalised. This cash can be anywhere between Rs.1000 and Rs. 1500 per day. However, the daily allowance will vary for each policyholder, and you can know the exact amount once you discuss it with your insurer.
One thing to note is that the amount will be given in a lump sum after you are discharged from the hospital. Even though it is called hospital cash or daily allowance, you will not receive this amount daily.
Safeguard Feature
The safeguard add-on feature lets you claim money on expenses that are otherwise non-payable. This can be for nebulisation kits, conveyance charges to and from the hospital, oxygen masks, and gloves, among others.
None of the primary health insurance plans offers coverage for non-payable items. That is why having a safeguard feature becomes necessary if you want to reduce expenses on such things.
To claim money under the safeguard feature, it must be noted that the cover is available only for small hospital-related expenses.
For larger expenses, only go for those that are covered under the primary health insurance plan.
Summing Up
Having add-on features with your health insurance plan ensures that most of your health-related expenses are covered. This way, you need not worry about spending too much of your hard-earned money on hospital expenses.
Always opt for trusted health insurance companies like Niva Bupa, as they provide cover on personal accident, critical illness, hospital cash, maternity or newborn cover, and many others.
With additional cover, your policy will be more comprehensive with increased protection. While choosing add-on features, ensure that you choose the right one. Opt for the ones you feel would work best with your current health insurance policy.
