Ensuring a Hassle-Free Travel Insurance Claims Process: All You Need to Know
Share
Whether you are embarking on a globe-trotting adventure or taking a spiritual journey to the peaceful mountains of Nepal, there is a constant for all trips. This constant is travel insurance. While often not mandatory, travel insurance is vital for any foreign trip.
This is because travellers outside one’s country are exposed to certain risks that can lead to unexpected expenses or negative travel experiences. With travel insurance, however, it is possible to mitigate this risk and travel with peace of mind.
But the very thing aimed at protecting you can be the cause of hassle when faced with those risks. This is why ensuring that the insurance provider you opt for has an easy and hassle-free travel insurance claim process is imperative.
What is travel insurance?
As mentioned above, travel insurance is a tool to protect travellers from unexpected travel expenses. This type of insurance covers several different facets in one. For example, it covers accidents, emergency hospitalisation, and even personal liability in case of any damage or injury caused when travelling.
While financial protection is the primary objective of insurance, there are other benefits, like being able to travel to certain countries that mandate having insurance when visiting them. It is also important to be able to access medical treatment in certain countries where it is essential to either have insurance or show your ability to pay the treatment charges before getting a treatment.
How does a travel claim work?
To understand how a claims process works, it is vital to know how insurance works. For the sake of this example, let us consider Arun’s situation. Arun is travelling to Greece with his family and is looking for an insurance policy to protect his investment and well-being when travelling. He visits the websites of various travel insurers and selects the one he likes. This policy covers emergency hospitalisations, personal accidents, adventure sports, etc. This means that if Arun or his family are injured while on a jet ski, they will be reimbursed or can apply for a cashless claim because they have coverage for it. On the other hand, if he and his entourage are not covered by adventure sports coverage, or it is a part of their policy exclusions, the insurer might deny their claim.

Here are the steps to request a claim settlement:
To file a travel insurance claim, you first need to contact your insurer.
In case of overseas travel, you may also contact the global Third-Party Administrator.
You can raise a claim online, through mail, or even physically. You can do so both while overseas or when you return to India.
You must submit a duly filled claim form along with the required documents based on the type of claim—for example, loss of baggage, trip cancellation, medical emergency, or death.
Besides this, one can make two types of claims in the case of a medical emergency.
Cashless Claims
In case of emergency hospitalisation, contact Europ-Assistance (a 24/7 emergency contact number and email address are available on our website) within 48 hours of admission.
An authorisation letter will then be shared with the policyholder specifying the sanctioned amount that will be issued. In that letter, all details will be specified, including if there is any limitation on the claim, applicable deductible/co-payment, and non-payable items, if applicable. There might also be a rejection letter mentioning the reason for the rejection.
